Kazakh Translations of M. Lermontov: “Alien” Text and Word-for-Word Translation

Автор: Urazayeva

In Kazakh translations of M. Yu. Lermontov’s works in the 80-90-s, the combination of precise and free translations is observed with prevailing exact ones. From the 20-30-s up to present days, the same works of the Russian classicist are the objects of word-for-word translation. The aim of this article is an intention to understand the reasons of prevailing word-for-word translations and to generalize wide-spread methods of its transfer. Non-randomness of prevailing word-for-word translation in the reviewed sphere is justiёed by the structure of the Kazakh language, correlation of the direct and indirect expressions in the translated text, relations of the signiёcant with the signiёed. Such an approach allowed justifying the conception on word-for-word translation as an analytical one. Other repeated, stable methods of meanings transfer also attract attention in word-for-word translation. It is a subjective and depictive descriptiveness and such relations between the expression and the graphics as the system of label relations, traditional symbolic character of the Kazakh poetic language that stipulate the rhetorical textual ёgures. The results of the project can be applied in theory and practice of literary translation, history of literature.

Transformation of Corporal Communication between Pilot and Machine in Russian Literature of the Early 20th Century

Автор: Zagidulina

The research is devoted to the problem of transformation in corporal communication between pilot and machine in Russian literature of the 1910-20s. The purpose of this research is to compare conceptual anthropomorphous and technical metaphors of classical and non-classical poetics. This analysis is based on the texts written in the 1910-1920-s and devoted to aviation; the theme selection is explained by the high distinctiveness of the text in the context of the chosen period. The author researches the development of two myths: the future-oriented, futuristic myth, where the human merges with the machine and assimilates with the mechanism; and the past-oriented myth where the assimilation of the machine to a living creature comes to the fore. The second myth is relevant for classic literature (A. Blok, A. Kuprin, L. Andreev and others). This myth perfectly ёts the pre-Soviet, Christian worldview, where soul is more important than mind and Christian images of the space structure (sacred top – sublunar bottom). The futuristic myth created by V. Mayakovsky, V. Khodasevich, V. Kamensky and others, is aimed at desacralization of heaven, highlighting the idea of merge of human and machine and even the idea of replacing human with the machine. Therefore, one may speak of two mythologies as two different worldviews, which appear in literature and culture in such an important and crucial period for Russian culture as the 1910-1920-s.

Semantic Situation and its Representation in the Texts of Different Genres

Автор: Tarasenko

In this paper the authors analyzed the semantic situation and its representation in accordance with the text type, namely, urban folklore texts – anecdotes (jokes) and ёction. The authors focused mainly on the situation of wine drinking. The set of actants depends on text nature realized differently in different types of texts. The most comprehensive representation of the wine drinking situation is found in Russian anecdotes: they feature the quantity and quality of the represented predicates and actants. In the literary text the selection of predicates and wine drinking participants is determined by the author’s intention.

Semiotic Development Potential of Henry Lawson’s Individual Concept “Mate/Mateship”

Автор: Dobryaeva

The paper envisages semiotic development potential of semantic structure of individual concept “Mate” created by Henry Lawson. The image in question is iconic for Australian culture. A certain share of idealization and romantization entails further development of the semantic meaning of this concept. The rooted semantic components of the concept-image “Mate” gradually turned into concept-symbol “Mateship”. H. Lawson was the ёrst Australian author, who made this concept one of the core concepts of Australian culture. Moreover, “Mateship” reяects the historical development of socio-economic relations within Australian society in 19 – 20 centuries. Having identiёed axiological meaning of the concepts “Mate / Mateship”, we could be aware of the basic values of Australians as a nation, and understand connections of the language and society.

The Linguistic Appraisal of Foul Language in Selected Yorщbб Video Films

Автор: Tиmнtọṕẹ́ Olъmъyмwб

Language is so subtle and complicated human phenomenon that it is used in communication for informative, expressive and directives. The environment we live is largely verbal therefore; language serves expressive function when used in conversation to get individuals to be more effective, polite and in causing or easing social tensions. In order to create social tension, foul language is usually employed. Though, the structural patterns of foul language used in everyday interaction in Yorщbб society are similar to the ones used in Yorщbб video ёlms. This assertion conёrms the generally belief that movie is a reяection of the society. The use of foul language in Yorщbб video ёlms has become a common feature to be ignored. The foul language examined in them in this study is divided into two: insults (ийbъ) and curses (иpи). The main thrust of this paper therefore, is to give a linguistic appraisal of the two types of foul language used in Yorщbб video ёlms. The paper examines the socio-semantic implications of foul language as it is used in the video ёlms and shows that insults are more frequently used than curses in the ёlms. Also, the paper examines the grammatical analysis of foul language used in the selected video ёlms and posits that while insults come in noun phrases and sentences, curses are delivered in verb phrases and sentences. The sentences used in both cases are one clause sentences which consist of NP subject and a predicate thereby making it easy to grasp.

The Rhetoric of Proust’s Early Aesthetic Manifestos

Автор: Laskina

Marcel Proust’s non-ёction heritage includes several texts that are usually seen as the future novelist’s attempts to formulate his views on the nature of art and to clarify his place in the literary life of the time. This article examines Proust’s most accomplished anti-symbolist manifesto, “Contre l’Obscuritй”, and three fragments describing different aspects of the creative experience. The purpose of this research is to investigate the rhetorical aspects of Proust’s reяection on the creative process and to establish the pragmatics of this sort of writing in the context of the novelist’s formation. While tracing the rhetoric strategies Proust uses to distance himself from the artistic trends of his own generation, the article proposes to read these early drafts not only as a theory of art but also as a manifestation of the author’s doubts and ambitions regarding his literary project. As proved in this article, Proust in his debuts is most original and most modernist not when he is trying to imitate art theorists or critics but when he is touching upon the struggles of a young author (fear to lose inspiration or to be unable to ёnish the major work, problems of ёnding literary identity, relationship with the readers).

Poetry as Bargaining in Osip Mandelstam’s and Marina Tsvetayeva’s Moscow Texts

Автор: Kornienko

The paper concerns metaphorical representations of the image of Moscow in Osip Mandelstam’s and Marina Tsvetaeva’s poetry and prose where themes of the open market bargaining play a signiёcant role. Mandelstam’s negative view on Tsvetaeva’s poetry collection “Mileposts. Vol. 1” is driven by his desire to distance himself from the chaotic and frightening city, personiёed in Tsvetaeva’s poetic person. Mandelstam’s essay “Sukharevka” is closely analyzed (in the context of Baudelaire’s poem “The Flowers of Evil”) in which the poet interprets this space as a precedent one (“a market in the middle of the city”), and bargaining itself is presented as permanent violence. While Mandelstam’s narrative voice is frightened by the crowded Russian market, Tsvetaeva’s lyrical self immerses in the market crowd and makes poetry, her only goods, a subject of commerce. Tsvetaeva’s poetic space is universalized, but the composition of imaginative complex that is important for the poetics of the book “Mileposts. Vol. 1” (black art – khlysts – market bargaining) is localized in the space of the Sukharevsky market.

Reading Akhmatova: on the Pathway to Finding Self

Автор: Mikhailova

Based on P. Ricoeur’s theory of reading, the article provides a literary solution to the problem of self-identiёcation, leading to the issue of a poet’s “narrative identity”. It is proved by the analysis of “Reading “Hamlet””, Anna Akhmatova’s early poem. Analysis of Akhmatova’s reёguration and study of this poetic conёguration have showed the poet’s desire to achieve selfhood by identifying the life-world with Shakespeare’s texts. The article presents the comparison of cultural meanings, characteristic to Shakespeare’s characters (Ophelia and Hamlet) from the point of view of Russian and European readers, Anna Akhmatova’s predecessors and contemporaries. Special attention is paid to possible identiёcation of Akhmatova with Elizabeth Siddal, one of the characters of the European cultural ёeld, and to her ёctional image of herself as Shakespeare’s Ophelia. Interpolating certain meanings of the read and interpreted cultural texts on the predicates of her own life situation of 19031912, Akhmatova, ёrst of all, clariёes her relationships with Nikolai Gumilev and solves the problem of preserving her own identity.

About a Mortal Plot in N. Gumilev’s Works: “The Severed Head”

Автор: Kulikova

The article considers the plot about “the severed head” used by N. Gumilev due to the inяuence of French authors – Ch. Leconte de Lisle and Ch. Baudelaire. The translations of “The Malay Pantums” by Leconte de Lisle and “The Martyr” by Baudelaire made by N. Gumilev demonstrate the attention of Gumilev to this theme, they inяuenced one of his last poems “The Strayed Tram” from the collection “The Pillar of Fire”. The roots of the plot about “the severed head” in “The Strayed Tram” according to the author of the article is connected with the texts by Ch. Leconte de Lisle and Ch. Baudelaire. Literary and art subtexts (Leconte de Lisle, Baudelaire, Moreau, Dorй, Redon, Beardsley etc.) enrich the plot stratum of “The Strayed Tram”, open its new meanings. The methodological basis of the research is determined by the unity of historical and literary, phenomenological, comparative and structural approaches.

Unfulёlled Fate of Chekhov’s Tales’ Characters: “Ionych”, “Literature Teacher”, “Gooseberry”, “About Love”

Автор: Borkowska Aldona

The subject of the study is an analysis of Anthon Chekhov’s selected tales which contain a convergence of ёction. The topic of unfulёlled fate seems to be a leading theme in Chekhov’s prose of the 1890s. The characters of the analyzed texts share the author’s opinion that indifference, everyday life, narrowmindness inяuence the fate not less than regular crimes or wicked deeds. In those narrations anyone should notice the development of Chekhov’s attitude to happiness which underlines the inяuence of the surrounding/environment on shaping human awareness. He claims that it is impossible to gain satisfaction without opposing to shallow opinions and the devoidness of ideas which are characteristic attributes of a petty bourgeoisie, the best example of whom are the characters’ stories.

“Story of King Leo” and the Parable Tradition to the Memory of Supervisor E.K. Romodanovskaya

Автор: Shunkov

The transition period era (the second half of the 17th-beginning of the 18th century) demonstrated multiple examples of the tradition substitution process, of transformation of the Russian literature genre system, of forming a new artistic paradigm, determining a new understanding of the author’s task. In such transformation process special attention is given to the new narrative style, which becomes a milestone of its era: the parable story. The parable story that appeared in Russian narrative tradition at the turn of the 17th-18th centuries caused the idea of a new way of perception demonstrated by the reader able to evaluate a ёctional plot. The article presents an analysis of Russian ёctional story, deёned in genre as a parable story. In the analysis of the story, the role of parable tradition manifests itself in the construction of the plot, in the images of the protagonists. The relevance of the article is determined by existence of a separate area of research engaged with the study of the narrative tradition in Russian literature of the transition period.

Intellectual Type of Creativity (Poetry)

Автор: Plekhanova

On the example of poetry, this paper explores intellectual modus of creativity as expression of tendency of artistic thinking in the 20th century. Intellectualization is interpreted as “directed thinking” (C. G. Jung), i.e. rationality that dominates in creativity. The paper outlines deёning mindsets of intellectual type of creativity: self-consciousness of art, reяection of gnosis, priority of aesthetics over ethics, alienated lyricism. Diversity of forms is illustrated by poetic examples of older symbolist V. Bryusov, futurist V. Khlebnikov, member of the absurdist group OBERIu N. Zabolotsky, neofuturist N. Glazkov, naturalistic philosopher A. Tarkovsky and minimalistic conceptualist V. Nekrasov. Intellectual type of creativity, along with visibly frozen spiritual processes, shows speciёc passion for possessing the absolute truth. This truth can be shown as universal idea (for instance, common unity, panlogism, hylozoism) or as a way of thinking (in examined cases – as aestheticism, Glazkov’s unprecedentism, conceptualism), which maximally approached the undogmatic, heuristic understanding of essence of nature of things and relations.
